Everything you need to grow Pachypodium well

Pachypodium is unforgiving of the wrong substrate and indifferent to most of what growers worry about. Start with what actually matters.

Know your Pachypodium

Over 20 recognized species ranging from small geophytic caudiciforms to tree-forming succulents reaching 8 meters. Cold tolerance and cultivation requirements vary significantly by species.

Where you grow shapes everything

Pachypodium is genuinely growable across a wider range of climates than most collectors realize — with the right species selection and overwintering approach.

The substrate Pachypodium roots evolved for

In its native Madagascar habitat, Pachypodium grows in rocky, gravelly soils that drain almost instantly after rain. The root system never experiences sustained wet soil. Standard potting mix replicates none of those conditions — it holds moisture, compacts, and creates the prolonged wet root zone that Pachypodium cannot survive.

Desert Oasis Potting Media is the same pumice-forward, fast-draining substrate used in our Adenium collection — and the requirements are nearly identical. Mineral-dominant, low organic fraction, fast dry-down between watering events.

Available at americanadenium.com in two sizes. The same media that works for Adenium arabicum works without modification for Pachypodium lamerei and most related species.
